Pakistan Drone Technology: A Surprise to the International Community

1 Mins read

Pakistan ranks eighth in the list of the countries that have indigenously developed armed drone technology. Pakistan through its own drone technology have developed unmaned armed plane called Burraq that have laser-guided missiles and can fly in different weather conditions. The Burraq has excellent targeting capabilities which were confirmed after a strike, and were later declared by the Major General Asim Bajwa. The General tweeted about the successful Drone attack on 7th of September, 2015:

‘First ever use of Pak made Burraq Drone today. Hit a terrorist compound in Shawal valley killing 3 high profile terrorists’.

Pakistan UAV Development:

There are many companies in Pakistan that are involved in the development of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), which include the Air Weapons Complex (AWC), Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), and National Development Complex (NDC). Apart from the public sector companies, there are many private companies that are involved in the development of UAVs.

Almost all the UAVs are being developed for the use of military purposes, but some are also used for remote sensing, reconnaissance, decoy systems, and stimulations. These types of Pakistan made Drones do not possess the capability of firing arms and are produced on a small scale. Some of the Drones equipped with the UAV technology, worth mentioning are the PACs Uqaab Drone and the PAC UAVs including the Ababeel and Bazz.

Pakistan Burraq Drone:

The name Burraq is named after a creature in Islamic tradition that resembles a horse and has wings. This Drone plane is equipped with the latest Pakistan UAV development as it has laser guided missiles and laser designator that has been developed by the National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCom). Burraq has the ability to find, attack, and destroy the targets. After a successful strike, Pakistan has joined the club of the countries which manufacture Drones. Pakistan Burraq Drone is based on the SELEX-GALILEO technology. According to a senior analyst and former Australian defense minister, Brian Cloughley:

“The Burraq and its targeting and command structure are obviously very much more sophisticated than many of us had imagined, spurring belief that [China’s] influence, cooperation and input may have been considerable”
